When a large concert is held inside a stadium, one of the first engineering tasks is not assembling the stage—it is protecting the venue itself.
Modern stadiums represent major long-term investments. Their running tracks, natural grass fields and underground drainage systems are designed for sporting events, not for supporting heavy cranes, hydraulic stages, Ringlock structures or thousands of tonnes of temporary equipment.
Without proper protection, concentrated loads can permanently damage synthetic tracks, compact natural grass, deform drainage systems and leave visible surface marks long after the concert has ended.
For this reason, professional concert construction always begins with a carefully designed Ground Protection System before the first structural component is installed.
During the construction of the 2026 Guangzhou Pearl Beer Festival Music Festival, we observed two different ground protection methods: one for the running track and another for the stadium grass field. Although the protection systems differed, both followed the same engineering principles—distribute loads, reduce friction, protect the original surface and provide a stable foundation for temporary structures.
Understanding these protection systems also helps explain why large concerts are built inside stadiums, where existing sports facilities must continue to serve their original purpose after the event.
During construction, two different protection systems were installed depending on the surface.
Before the hydraulic roof stage and Ringlock structures were erected, the running track was covered with multiple protective layers consisting of:
Waterproof plastic sheeting (red, blue and white)
Grey anti-slip felt
White protective plastic boards
Steel plates beneath heavily loaded areas
Wooden bearing pads beneath every Ringlock standard
The stadium grass used a different protection system consisting of:
Waterproof plastic sheeting
Plastic Interlocking Modular Floor panels
Rather than allowing construction vehicles and workers to move directly across the grass, the modular flooring created a temporary working surface capable of supporting continuous traffic throughout the construction period.
Unlike conventional construction sites, stadium surfaces are designed for athletes rather than engineering equipment.
Concert construction introduces temporary loads such as:
Hydraulic roof stages
Ringlock scaffold systems
LED walls
Line array speaker towers
Mobile cranes
Forklifts
Trucks
Generators
Thousands of workers
Many of these loads remain in the same position for several days.
Without adequate protection, concentrated forces can permanently deform synthetic tracks, damage turf and compact soil beneath the playing field.
Ground protection therefore becomes an essential part of temporary event engineering rather than simply a site preparation task.
The running track surrounding the stadium required several layers of protection before any temporary structures were installed.
Each layer performed a different engineering function.
The first protective layer consisted of waterproof plastic sheets in red, blue and white.
Placed directly on the running track, these sheets isolated the surface from:
Moisture
Mud
Dust
Construction debris
Oil contamination
They also helped prevent stains caused by prolonged construction activities.
Above the waterproof sheeting, crews installed a layer of grey anti-slip felt.
This layer served several important purposes.
It increased friction between adjacent protection layers, reducing the possibility of movement under repeated loading.
It also absorbed small surface irregularities, helping distribute pressure more evenly while protecting the track beneath.
White protective plastic boards were installed above the felt.
Instead of allowing concentrated wheel loads to act directly on the running track, these rigid boards spread loads across a much larger contact area.
They also created a stable working surface for personnel moving equipment around the construction site.
Areas supporting the greatest structural loads received additional steel plates.
These were positioned beneath:
Hydraulic roof stage foundations
Ringlock structures
Heavy lifting equipment
The steel plates further increased the effective bearing area, reducing local pressure on the underlying protection system.
Every Ringlock vertical standard rested on an individual wooden bearing pad approximately 100 × 100 mm in size.
Although simple, these timber pads performed two important engineering functions.
First, they distributed concentrated point loads from each vertical standard over a larger surface area.
Second, the timber surface increased friction between the steel base plate and the steel protection plate below, reducing the possibility of movement during construction.
This detail illustrates how even small components contribute to the overall stability of temporary structures.

The engineering strategy for the grass field differed from that of the running track.
Rather than supporting concentrated structural loads, the objective was to protect the natural turf while allowing continuous movement of personnel and equipment.
The protection system consisted of two primary layers.
A waterproof plastic membrane was first laid across the grass surface.
This isolated the turf from construction debris and moisture while creating a clean separation between the grass and the temporary flooring system.
Above the waterproof membrane, workers assembled Plastic Interlocking Modular Floor panels.
These modular panels locked together to form a continuous temporary floor covering the working area.
Unlike ordinary plywood sheets, modular flooring systems provide several engineering advantages.
The interlocking floor spreads wheel loads and pedestrian traffic across a much larger area.
Instead of concentrating pressure directly onto the grass, loads are distributed through the modular panel system, reducing soil compaction and protecting the root zone.
The interconnected panels create a flat and stable platform for transporting stage components, lighting equipment, LED panels and sound systems.
This improves both construction efficiency and worker safety.
The modular flooring prevents direct contact between heavy equipment and the grass, significantly reducing mechanical damage during installation and dismantling.
Because each panel is modular, the flooring can be assembled quickly before construction and removed efficiently after the event.
Once dismantled, the stadium can begin its recovery process without requiring permanent alterations to the field.
The project demonstrated that different stadium surfaces require different engineering solutions.

Although the materials differed, both systems followed the same engineering philosophy.
Temporary loads should never act directly on permanent stadium surfaces.
Ground protection is often overlooked because it disappears beneath the finished concert stage.
However, every temporary structure depends on the stability of the surface beneath it.
Hydraulic roof stages, Ringlock systems, LED structures and relay speaker towers all rely on a properly prepared foundation.
This is why the ground protection system is installed before any structural work begins.
During this project, the protection system formed the true first stage of construction—long before the roof, LED screens or sound systems became visible.

One defining characteristic of temporary event engineering is that everything must be removed after the event.
The goal is not only to build a safe concert venue but also to return the stadium to its original condition as quickly as possible.
Every protective layer observed during this project reflected that philosophy.
Instead of modifying the stadium permanently, engineers introduced temporary protection systems that could be removed once construction was complete.
This allows major concerts and sporting events to coexist within the same venue while preserving valuable public infrastructure.

A successful stadium concert begins long before the first truss is assembled.
