Black hardware is visually discreet behind dark drapes, while silver or decorative metallic finishes may be preferable when the frame is intentionally exposed.

How to Select the Right Pipe and Drape System

Step 1: Define the Application

First determine what the system must achieve:

  • Decorative backdrop

  • Temporary partition

  • Exhibition booth

  • Privacy enclosure

  • Backstage room

  • Indoor canopy frame

  • Curved or circular installation

  • Custom decorative display

A standard partition and a decorative wedding frame may use different component families and should not be selected in the same way.


Step 2: Confirm the Dimensions

Record the required:

  • Overall height

  • Total length

  • Width of each section

  • Number of sections

  • Enclosure depth

  • Opening dimensions

  • Available ceiling clearance

  • Installation footprint

Adjustable components should be selected according to their designed range. They should not be extended beyond their intended adjustment limits.


Step 3: Choose the Layout

Select the configuration that best fits the venue and intended use:

  • Straight

  • L-shaped

  • U-shaped

  • Curved or circular

  • Exhibition grid

  • Rectangular canopy

  • Peaked canopy

  • Custom decorative frame

The number and direction of connected sections affect the required uprights, fittings and base positions.


Step 4: Select the Drapes or Decorations

Confirm the fabric type, panel size, fullness and total weight. If the structure will carry flowers, signage, lighting or other decorative materials, include them in the planning information.

Do not evaluate only the weight of the frame. The complete installed system must be considered.


Step 5: Match the Bases to the Configuration

Base selection depends on:

  • System height

  • Section width

  • Frame geometry

  • Fabric and decorative weight

  • Number of connected sides

  • Public access

  • Floor conditions

  • Indoor airflow

  • Outdoor exposure

Every upright must use a compatible base unless the selected structure has a specifically designed alternative support system.


Step 6: Review the Installation Environment

Before confirming the system, check:

  • Indoor or outdoor location

  • Floor level and surface condition

  • Ceiling height

  • Doors and airflow

  • Emergency exits

  • Public circulation routes

  • Nearby technical equipment

  • Venue installation restrictions

Pipe and drape systems are primarily suited to controlled indoor environments. Outdoor installations require a site-specific assessment because fabric and decorative materials can create wind load.

Step 7: Plan Installation, Transport and Storage

For systems intended for repeated use, consider:

  • Component length when packed

  • Transport vehicle dimensions

  • Carrying bags and cases

  • Storage racks

  • Setup and dismantling time

A configuration that is easy to transport, organize and inspect may be more practical for a rental company than one selected only by its installed appearance.


Step 8: Confirm the Complete Component List

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Upright quantity and height range

  • Crossbar quantity and width range

  • Base size and weight

  • Drapes and fabric dimensions

  • Corner or multi-direction connectors

  • Curved supports

  • Extensions

  • Additional ballast

Indoor and Outdoor Installation Safety

Pipe and drape systems are temporary freestanding structures. Their stability depends on the complete combination of uprights, crossbars, bases, drapes, accessories, layout and installation environment.

A configuration that is suitable for a controlled indoor venue should not automatically be considered suitable for outdoor use.

The following information provides general planning guidance. Final installation must follow the instructions for the selected system, venue requirements, applicable local regulations and any site-specific engineering or safety assessment.


Before Installation

Before assembling the system, confirm:

  • Required height and total length

  • Number and direction of connected sections

  • Upright and crossbar compatibility

  • Base size and weight

  • Fabric and decorative load

  • Floor or ground conditions

  • Indoor or outdoor location

  • Public access around the structure

  • Emergency exits and circulation routes

  • Nearby doors, ventilation and technical equipment

  • Venue approval or permit requirements

All components should be inspected before installation. Bent uprights, damaged crossbars, deformed bases, worn connectors or missing locking parts should not be used.

Follow the approved installation methodology for modular systems.


Indoor Installation

Indoor venues generally provide more controlled conditions, but correct base selection and positioning remain essential.


Use a Suitable Floor Surface

Install the system on a firm, level and stable surface. Base plates should sit flat on the floor without rocking, tilting or resting on cables, carpet edges or uneven materials.

Do not use loose objects to level a base plate unless they form part of an approved installation method.


Position Every Base Correctly

Each upright must be connected to a compatible base unless the selected frame uses another specifically designed support arrangement.

Bases should be positioned according to the complete layout. They should not be turned or relocated only to make them less visible if doing so reduces stability.


Consider Indoor Airflow

Air movement from doors, loading entrances, air-conditioning outlets and large ventilation systems can affect drapes.

Fabric can behave like a sail even indoors. Tall backdrops, long fabric runs and enclosed layouts require additional attention near strong airflow.


Keep Exit Routes Clear

Pipe and drape systems, bases, fabric and accessories must not obstruct:

  • Emergency exits

  • Exit signs

  • Fire extinguishers

  • Alarm points

  • Sprinklers

  • Fire doors

  • Accessible routes

  • Venue service access

Fabric should not extend into walkways or create a hidden trip hazard. Public circulation routes must remain clear throughout installation, use and dismantling.


Check Fabric Requirements

Confirm whether the venue requires documentation for the flame-propagation performance of drapes and decorative materials.

Requirements vary by country, venue and event type. Do not describe a fabric as flame-retardant or compliant unless suitable documentation is available for the specific material.

Cleaning, washing, coating or long-term use may affect some fabric treatments. Confirm whether retesting or renewed documentation is required.


Control Decorative Loads

Flowers, signs, lighting, chandeliers and layered fabrics add weight and may create eccentric loads.

Decorative items should only be attached at approved points. Standard crossbars, curved supports and canopy frames should not be used for suspended loads unless they are specifically designed and assessed for that purpose.


Outdoor and Semi-Open Installation

Standard pipe and drape systems are primarily intended for controlled indoor use. Outdoor and semi-open environments introduce wind, rain, uneven ground and rapidly changing weather conditions.


Do Not Assume an Indoor System Is Suitable Outdoors

Outdoor installation should only proceed when:

  • The system is intended for outdoor use

  • The complete configuration has been assessed

  • Suitable ballast or anchoring has been specified

  • Ground conditions have been checked

  • Weather conditions can be monitored

  • A shutdown and removal plan is in place

  • Local requirements and venue rules have been satisfied

Adding unverified weight to an indoor configuration does not automatically make it safe for outdoor use.


Treat Drapes as Wind-Exposed Surfaces

Fabric significantly increases the area exposed to wind. The force on the system depends on more than the forecast wind speed.

Relevant factors include:

  • Drape height and total area

  • Fabric opacity and permeability

  • Direction of the wind

  • Surrounding buildings

  • Open doors and passageways

  • Exposure at the site

  • Gusts and sudden weather changes

  • Shape of the complete layout

A U-shaped, circular or enclosed configuration may behave differently from a straight backdrop. Wind can approach from any direction and should not be assumed to act only on the front of the drape.


Establish Weather Limits Before Use

Outdoor event planning should define in advance:

  • Who monitors the weather

  • Which forecast and on-site information will be used

  • The operating wind limit

  • The action level for removing drapes

  • The action level for closing the area

  • Who has authority to stop use

  • Where people should move if conditions become unsafe

Operating limits should come from the system documentation or a qualified site-specific assessment. Do not invent a universal wind-speed limit for all pipe and drape configurations.


Monitor Conditions Continuously

Weather should be reviewed before installation and monitored throughout the event.

Stop using the system and follow the approved action plan when:

  • Conditions approach the defined operating limit

  • Gusts cause visible movement or instability

  • Bases begin to shift or lift

  • Uprights lean

  • Crossbars or connections move

  • Drapes pull strongly against the structure

  • Thunderstorms or other hazardous weather approach

  • Responsible site personnel instruct that the area be closed

Removing the fabric may reduce wind exposure, but it does not confirm that the remaining frame is safe to leave in place.


Rain and Water Exposure

Rain can increase the weight of some fabrics and decorative materials. Wet surfaces may also reduce friction beneath base plates and create slip hazards around the installation.

Electrical equipment, lighting and powered decorations require separate weather protection and electrical safety planning.


Outdoor Canopy Restrictions

Rectangular, round and peaked decorative frames must not be treated as tents, weather shelters or structural roofs unless they are specifically designed and approved for that use.

Adding overhead fabric can create uplift and lateral forces. A decorative indoor canopy frame should not be covered and used outdoors as rain or sun protection.


Bases, Ballast and Anchoring

Base selection should consider:

  • System height

  • Crossbar span

  • Number of connected sections

  • Fabric weight and area

  • Decorative loads

  • Layout geometry

  • Public access

  • Floor or ground conditions

  • Environmental exposure

Additional ballast must be positioned so that it cannot slide, damage the base connection or create a trip hazard.

Do not suspend weights from crossbars or uprights unless the system is specifically designed for that method. Do not rely on furniture, equipment cases or unrelated event products as improvised ballast.

Ground anchors should only be used where permitted and when their capacity and installation method have been confirmed.

Public Areas and Access Control

Where visitors can approach the system:

  • Keep base plates visible or safely protected

  • Prevent climbing, pulling and unauthorized adjustment

  • Keep children away from unsupported decorative elements

  • Do not allow guests to lean against the drapes

  • Protect exposed connection points

  • Maintain clear circulation space

  • Use barriers or supervision where necessary

Bases and accessories should not create unexpected changes in floor level. If a base is covered, the covering must not conceal a trip hazard or interfere with inspection.


Safety for Custom Backdrop Frames

Heart-shaped, circular, moon-shaped, arched and layered backdrop frames are primarily decorative structures.

Before use, confirm:

  • Correct assembly of every frame section

  • Full engagement of connectors

  • Stable contact between the feet and floor

  • Total flower, fabric and signage weight

  • Load distribution across the frame

  • Absence of sharp or unfinished edges

  • Clearance from guests and circulation routes

  • Compatibility of any hanging accessories

Large floral arrangements can create uneven loading. Decorations concentrated on one side may require a different support arrangement from a symmetrically decorated frame.


Inspection Checklist


Before Opening the Area

Check that:

  • Every required base is installed

  • All uprights are vertical

  • Crossbars are fully connected

  • Adjustment mechanisms are secured

  • Curved sections are correctly joined

  • Fabrics are properly supported

  • Drapes do not interfere with bases

  • Decorative items are securely attached

  • Exits and walkways remain clear

  • No component is visibly damaged

  • The system does not move under normal site conditions


During the Event

Inspect the installation periodically and after:

  • Accidental contact

  • Layout changes

  • Fabric replacement

  • Addition of decorations

  • Door or ventilation changes

  • Weather changes

  • Any visible movement

If the configuration changes, the original safety assumptions may no longer apply.


After the Event

During dismantling:

  • Remove decorations and fabric before releasing structural connections

  • Prevent components from falling or swinging

  • Keep the work area separated from guests

  • Inspect components for damage

  • Store parts by type and size

  • Remove damaged components from service

  • Record missing or replacement parts


Important Safety Limitations

Pipe and drape must not be used as:

  • A crowd-control barrier

  • A fall-protection system

  • A load-bearing wall

  • A climbing frame

  • A structural roof

  • A weather shelter

  • A support for unapproved suspended equipment


Never exceed the designed adjustment range of uprights or crossbars. Do not combine unrelated components merely because they appear to fit.
