An important consideration is the relation of the set to the auditorium.
When a stage set is too small for the auditorium, the sIGHTLINEs will reveal blind spots where large areas of the stage are invisible from some seats. Sightlines are equally important to show how wide to make the BACKINGs placed behind doors, windows and fire- places. If they are too narrow, spectators can look through these openings and see parts of the backstage areas.
All types of design have similar practical requirements. It would be easy to design a dress that would be more becoming than anything women wear today.
