When audiences watch a large stadium concert, one of the most memorable moments is often when performers leave the main stage and walk toward the audience.
This extended structure is commonly called a walkway stage, catwalk stage, or runway stage.
However, a concert walkway is not simply a long platform added for visual effects.
Behind the performance experience is a carefully planned temporary structure that must support performers, cameras, technical crews and equipment while maintaining safe circulation between the main stage and the audience area.
During the construction of the 2026 Guangzhou Pearl Beer Festival Music Festival, we observed how the walkway stage was integrated with the main stage, independent lighting platforms and the circular end stage.
The result was not an isolated extension, but a complete performance system designed to improve audience interaction while supporting the operational requirements of a modern stadium production.

The walkway stage observed during this project included several distinctive features:
A central walkway extending approximately 20 metres from the main stage.
A circular stage approximately 10 metres in diameter at the end of the walkway.
Staircases installed on both sides of the walkway.
Two independent lighting platforms positioned parallel to the walkway.
The lighting platforms were approximately 500 mm lower than the walkway surface.
The entire structure was surrounded by black stage skirts.
The walkway was connected directly to the main stage system.
These features show that the walkway was designed not only for performers, but also for camera operation, technical access, maintenance and audience experience.
A stadium concert creates a unique challenge:
The audience area is extremely large.
Even with a powerful main stage, performers may appear distant to spectators located farther away from the centre of the performance area.
A walkway stage solves this problem by extending the performance zone into the audience space.
Instead of limiting the show to the main stage, performers can move closer to spectators while maintaining the same lighting, sound and video production environment.
This approach has become a common feature in large touring productions and is part of the wider planning principles behind Concert & Event Stage Solutions.
The purpose is not simply to make the stage longer.
The purpose is to create a better relationship between performers and audiences.
At the end of the walkway, a circular stage approximately 10 metres in diameter created a secondary performance area.
Rather than functioning as an independent stage, the circular platform and walkway formed one continuous structure.

First, performers could move deep into the audience area while remaining connected to the main production system.
Second, the circular shape allowed performers to face different directions, improving interaction with spectators around the platform.

One interesting detail observed during this project was the installation of staircases on both sides of the walkway.
At first glance, these stairs may appear to be designed mainly for performers.
However, based on the overall layout and construction requirements, their primary purpose appeared to be operational access.
Possible functions included:
Camera operator access.
Lighting technician access.
Construction and maintenance access.
Equipment transportation.
Supporting performer access, such as dancers.
The main singers or performers would normally use dedicated backstage routes connected to the main stage.
Therefore, these side staircases were more likely designed as flexible working access points rather than the primary performer entrance.
This separation between performer movement and technical circulation is an important principle in large event planning.
Another distinctive feature was the installation of two independent lighting platforms positioned in front of the main stage and alongside the walkway.
These platforms were approximately 500 mm lower than the walkway surface.
This height difference created a clear separation between the performance area and technical equipment areas.
The design likely served several purposes:
By lowering the lighting platforms, performers and backstage personnel were less likely to accidentally enter the technical equipment zone during the performance.
Lighting fixtures, cables and adjustment areas remained clearly separated.
The independent platforms provided dedicated positions for lighting equipment without occupying the main performer movement area.
This allowed lighting designers to create suitable angles for performers on the walkway and circular stage.
Separating technical equipment from performance circulation reduces the risk of:
Equipment contact.
Cable interference.
Accidental collision.
Uncontrolled movement near lighting fixtures.
This reflects the same engineering philosophy used throughout temporary event structures: different functions should have clearly defined spaces.
The entire perimeter of the walkway and circular stage was covered with black stage skirts.

Without these coverings, audiences would see the temporary engineering structure beneath the performance surface.
