Powder coating may look smooth and uniform after finishing, but appearance alone does not tell us how well the coating is attached to the steel underneath.
During a recent visit to a powder coating facility, an engineer demonstrated a simple practical method for checking the adhesion of the powder-coated surface on a steel Ringlock component.
The test was easy to understand, and more importantly, it showed us what we should actually look for when evaluating a powder-coated steel surface.
The purpose is not to see whether the powder coating can be scratched.
In fact, during the test, the coating is intentionally cut completely through to the steel substrate.
The real question is:
After the coating has been cut, will the surrounding powder-coated layer remain firmly attached to the steel, or will pieces of coating be pulled away easily?
This makes the test useful as a simple practical check of coating adhesion.
It is especially relevant to the steel components used in Ringlock and other temporary structure systems, where powder coating is commonly selected as a surface finish.
For the complete production sequence, see our Steel Ringlock / Layher-Type Structure Powder Coating Process.
The engineer first used a dedicated cutting tool to make a series of parallel cuts across the powder-coated Ringlock tube.
The cuts were made deeply enough to penetrate the entire coating layer and reach the steel underneath.
This point is important.
Seeing exposed steel in the cut does not mean that the coating has failed. The coating is deliberately cut through as part of the test.
A second series of cuts was then made across the first cuts at approximately 90 degrees.
This created a small grid or cross-hatch pattern on the coated surface.
The coating inside and around this grid had now been intentionally disturbed, giving us an area where its resistance to further separation could be observed.
Transparent adhesive tape was placed directly over the cut area.
The engineer pressed the tape firmly against the surface so that it made good contact with the coating, including the area around the grid.
This is where the test becomes very intuitive.
If the surrounding coating is poorly attached to the substrate, the tape may help expose that weakness when it is removed.
After the tape had been pressed firmly into place, the engineer pulled it away quickly.
We then inspected both:
the grid area on the Ringlock tube; and
the adhesive side of the removed tape.
What we wanted to see was whether the coating around the cuts remained attached to the steel.
In our simple workshop language:
We were not testing whether the powder coating could be cut. We had already deliberately cut through it. We were checking whether the coating around those cuts would come away together with the tape.
If obvious pieces or sections of coating are pulled away, that can indicate a potential adhesion problem that deserves further investigation.
If the surrounding coating remains substantially attached, it provides a useful practical indication that the coating process has produced reasonable adhesion under the conditions of that check.
Good adhesion does not come only from choosing a good powder.
The final result can also be affected by the condition and preparation of the metal surface, contamination, pretreatment, application conditions, curing and the characteristics of the substrate itself.
This is also why we should not assume that steel and aluminum should always receive exactly the same surface-treatment process.
We explain this material difference in more detail in Steel vs Aluminum Powder Coating: Why Surface Treatment Depends on Material.
For additional practical questions about choosing and evaluating surface treatments, see our Powder Coating Manufacturing FAQ: Surface Treatment Decisions for Aluminum Truss and Ringlock Components.
Not necessarily.
The method demonstrated to us resembles commonly used cross-cut / cross-hatch and tape adhesion testing principles, in which a coating is cut in a grid pattern and evaluated after tape is applied and removed.
However, what we observed was a practical on-site process check demonstrated by the powder coating engineer.
We should not automatically describe such a workshop demonstration as a certified ASTM or ISO test unless the specified test method, cutting tool, spacing, coating thickness, tape, environmental conditions, evaluation criteria and other required procedures have actually been documented and followed.
Therefore, we use this test as a practical manufacturing observation and quality-checking method, rather than claiming that it independently proves compliance with a particular coating standard.
The most useful part of this demonstration was not the tool or the tape.
It was understanding what to observe.
A powder-coated component can look beautiful immediately after production. But surface appearance and coating adhesion are two different questions.
By deliberately damaging a small test area and observing what happens around that damage, we can learn more about how firmly the coating is attached to the underlying steel.
For us as a manufacturer of temporary stage, truss and Ringlock structure components, these small workshop tests are useful because they turn an abstract idea such as “good powder coating adhesion” into something that can actually be seen and discussed during production.
