Is COB Different from LED?

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in stage lighting.

COB (Chip-on-Board) is not a different lighting technology. It is one type of LED packaging technology.

Modern LED fixtures mainly use two packaging methods:

  • COB LEDs – Multiple LED chips are integrated into a single light-emitting surface, producing soft, uniform, high-intensity illumination.

  • SMD LEDs – Individual LED chips are mounted separately on the circuit board, making them ideal for RGB color mixing and wash lighting.

In other words, every COB light is an LED light, but not every LED light uses COB technology.
