When designing a Ninja Warrior course, the choice of truss system is as important as the obstacle design itself. Different connection methods affect not only structural performance, but also how easily obstacles, brackets and accessories can be mounted to the frame.
Dragon Stage offers three common aluminum truss options for Ninja Warrior structures:
For most Ninja Warrior applications, we generally recommend bolt-connected truss systems because the connection areas remain smooth and flush after assembly, making obstacle installation easier and safer.
Before selecting a truss system, it is helpful to understand the principles behind modular structural systems and how load analysis affects structural performance.
Plate ended bolt truss is the strongest and most rigid option among the three systems. Each truss section is connected through precision-machined end plates and high-strength bolts, creating a continuous structural frame with minimal movement at the joints.
Because the connection plates sit flush with the truss profile, there are no protruding pins or couplers extending beyond the frame. This smooth surface is particularly beneficial for Ninja Warrior courses where obstacles, grips, hanging bars and custom brackets are frequently mounted directly onto the truss. The unobstructed connection area allows installers to position obstacles exactly where needed without interference.
Heavy-duty bolt truss is often selected for permanent Ninja gyms, large-scale obstacle competitions and structures carrying high dynamic loads generated by swinging, jumping and climbing activities.
For projects requiring custom spans, obstacle spacing or unique layouts, our Custom Stage Production team can design a structure specifically tailored to the course requirements.
Ordinary bolt truss uses bolted connections similar to heavy-duty bolt truss but with a lighter structural profile and simpler connection plates. It offers an excellent balance between strength, installation convenience and cost.
For many Ninja Warrior training facilities and temporary competition courses, ordinary bolt truss provides sufficient load capacity while maintaining the smooth connection surfaces that obstacle installers prefer. Since there are no external couplers or protruding connectors, obstacle mounting remains straightforward and flexible.
This type of truss is commonly used for medium-sized Ninja Warrior courses, obstacle race training centers and portable competition structures where cost efficiency is important without sacrificing usability.

Spigot truss is widely used in stage and event industries because of its fast assembly system. Individual truss sections are connected using conical couplers, steel pins and retaining clips, allowing rapid installation and dismantling.
However, for Ninja Warrior applications, the spigot connection hardware creates localized protrusions around the joints. While these components are structurally reliable, they can sometimes interfere with obstacle brackets, grip installations or custom attachment points positioned near the connection areas.
Spigot truss remains a good choice when rapid setup and transportation are the primary concerns, particularly for touring events or temporary obstacle courses. Nevertheless, when obstacle mounting flexibility and a clean structural surface are priorities, bolt truss systems are generally preferred.
For users unfamiliar with different connection methods, our Connection & Material System in Stage and Truss Engineering page provides a detailed explanation of truss connection technologies and their engineering implications.

The primary advantage of bolt truss systems is the smooth and uninterrupted connection area after assembly. Ninja Warrior obstacles are rarely installed at perfectly regular intervals, and designers often need complete freedom when positioning hanging elements, grips, rings, bars and custom challenge modules.
A flush bolt connection eliminates interference from couplers and pins, making installation easier while providing a cleaner and more professional structure.
In addition, Ninja Warrior courses generate repeated dynamic loads rather than simple static loads. Swinging, jumping and body-weight impacts create forces that must be considered during structural design. For this reason, we strongly recommend reviewing Structural Engineering Fundamentals and Safety Standards & Engineering Constraints when planning a permanent obstacle course.
