An important consideration is the relation of the set to the auditorium.

When a stage set is too small for the auditorium, the sIGHTLINEs will reveal blind spots where large areas of the stage are invisible from some seats. Sightlines are equally important to show how wide to make the BACKINGs placed behind doors, windows and fire- places. If they are too narrow, spectators can look through these openings and see parts of the backstage areas.

All types of design have similar practical requirements. It would be easy to design a dress that would be more becoming than anything women wear today. But a dress that is not in fashion will not sell, no matter how ugly the fashion happens to be. When you plan model scenery, consider the needs of the BUILDING CREW, the director, and the actors. Such thinking is essential in designing things that must be practical, such as miniature radios or speed- boats.
