A stage set should tell the audience about the play as soon as the curtain goes up.it can be religious, romantic, light and promises a comedy, and melodramatic.

Such differences in mood are vital. Spectators see the sets of stage plays before they see the play. If a set announces a play about real people and the play then turns out to be a fairy tale, the audience will be confused. If Goldilocks and the Thre Bears were staged in a religious stage scene, it would almost certainly fail. The setting would make the audience expect an entirely different kind of play.

Learn as much as you can about the play before you start to design. If it is about real people, make each set look like a real place. If the play is about imaginary characters, give your scenery imposible lines or colors to warn the spectators against taking the action seriously. When the play is cheerful, use light tones with touches of red or yellow. Gloomy or mysterious plays call for dark tones, thick draperies and deep shadows like those in a specific set.
